You will participate in the Paris marathon.
2. You are going to participate in the Paris marathon.

Les deux phrases sont correctes grammaticalement. "Will" et "are going to" ont le même sens. Voici les differénces avec "will" et "be going to":

1. Normalement, "be going to" implique une action imminente, alors que "will" parle d'un futur plus lointain.

2. Lorsque vous utilisez "be going to", ça veut dire aussi que vous avez déjà prévu cette action. Alors que "will" suggère une action incertaine.

Voici la formation de "be going to" :

I am going to participate in the Paris marathon.
You are going to participate in the Paris marathon.
He is going to participate in the Paris marathon.
She is going to participate in the Paris marathon.
We are going to participate in the Paris marathon.
They are going to participate in the Paris marathon.

Par exemple : "Je vais au marathon demain" ou "I am going to the marathon tomorrow.

So for those who will participate or are going to participate in the Paris marathon... bonne chance à vous !!!

Are you burnt-out?

1. He needs to take a vacation. He is burnt-out.
2. He hasn't slept since last night that's why he looks so stressed out.
3. The life in the city is so stressful. The traffic makes me sick. I hope this doesn't lead to burnt-out

So, are you burnt-out? Well, I hope not. :-)

An Unforgettable Experience in Paris

Je me suis demandé, "Is this Paris, what they call as the City of Love?"

Serrés comme des sardines !

En anglais, on utilise les expressions squashed like sardines ou packed like sardines. Par exemple :

I could not breathe while I was inside the metro. We were squashed like sardines.
Somebody fainted inside the metro because we were packed like sardines.

Voilà... j'ai une question : Quelle est la différence entre les phrases "They play pétanque at the Luxembourg garden" et "They are playing pétanque at the Luxembourg garden" ?

They play pétaque at the Luxembourg garden.

I am playing pétanque.

You are playing pétanque.

He/She is playing pétanque.

We are playing pétanque.

They are playing pétanque.

The team is playing pétanque in two hours.

The men are playing pétanque soon.

I am writing more articles in the coming days so I hope you would visit my blog from time to time.

Regarder Florence Foresti me fait rire. For me, she is really funny and watching her is a lot of fun.

1. I recently went to Bali, Indonesia. My vacation was (fun, funny).
2. Someone told me that the most popular movie in France now is "Bienvenue Chez Les ch'ti". I heard it was (fun, funny).
3. I want to try skiing. I think it's (fun, funny).
4. The joke he told last night was very (fun, funny).

I recently went to Bali, Indonesia. My vacation was fun.

I want to try skiing. I think it's fun.

Donc...

Someone told me that the most popular movie in France now is "Bienvenue Ches Les ch'ti". I heard it was funny.

The joke he told last night was very funny.

It's funny when I hear them say funny instead of fun when describing about their experiences. So, I hope that with this explanation, you now know the difference between the two words. Learning is a lot of fun, isn't it?

Tongue Twisters

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers?
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Facile ou difficile ? Essayez un autre exemple :

Betty Botter had some butter,
"But," she said, "this butter's bitter.
If I bake this bitter butter,
it would make my batter bitter.
But a bit of better butter--
that would make my batter better."

So she bought a bit of butter,
better than her bitter butter,
and she baked it in her batter,
and the batter was not bitter.
So 'twas better Betty Botter
bought a bit of better butter.

Seek, Search and Look For

Excuse me, I am (seeking, searching, looking for) the nearest Metro station. Where may I find it, please?

1) seek
2) search
3) look for

I am seeking jobs right now. (Je cherche du travail en ce moment)
I will seek his advice.

I searched the internet for the translation.
The police is searching his wallet. (Le policier cherche son portefeuille).
I am searching for the meaning of the word in my dictionary.

I am looking for my dog. (Je cherche mon chien.)
I lost my wallet. I'm looking for it. (J'ai perdu mon portefeuille. Je le cherche).

Donc, pour ma question...

Excuse me, I am (seeking, searching, looking for) the nearest Metro station. Where may I find it, please?

Was I able to find the answer to what you were (seeking, searching, looking for)? If not, let me know and I shall (seek, search, look for) my books for more answers. As they say (seek, search, look for) and you will find.

The answers: looking for, search, seek.

Shit!

"Shit!" :-)

Mes Photos du Mont St- Michel

Oh My God! Oh My Gosh! Oh My Goodness!

Et voila, me revoilou !

1. Oh my God!
2. Oh my Gosh!
3. Oh my Golly!
4. Oh my Goodness!

I want to fuck her", Houston lui a repondu "Oh my goodness." Voici le video :

"Oh my God!", "Oh my Gosh!"et "Oh my Goodness" expriment le sentiment d'etre "choqué" ou "surpris".

Donc, vous pouvez dire, "Ned's blog is back! Oh my gosh!"

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nedlegs.blogspot.com/2008/01/oh-my-god-oh-my-gosh-oh-my-goodness.html' title='Oh My God! Elle est interprétée par un groupe nommé " Everything but the girl " et la chanson est " I didn't know I was looking for love ".

I was alone thinking I was just fine
I wasn't looking for anyone to be mine
I thought love was just a fabrication
A train that wouldn't stop at my station
Home, alone, that was my consignment
( Chez moi , seule, c'était mon fardeau )
Solitary confinement
(Emprisonnement solitaire )
So when we met
( Alors quand nous nous sommes rencontré )
I was skirting around you
( Je tournais autour de toi )
I didn't know I was looking for love
until I found you

1. An action that was going on in the past at the same time as another action.
Il lisait pendant que j'écrivais. He was reading while I was writing.

2. An action that was going on in the past when another action occurred.
Il lisait quand je suis entré. He was reading when I came in.

3. An action that a person did habitually in the past.
We used to go to the beach every day.

4. A description of a mental or physical activity in the past.
He was sad when I saw him.
Quand mère était jeune, elle était belle. When my mother was young, she was beautiful.

5. An action or state of being that occurred in the past and lasted for a certain length of time.
I had been waiting for the bus for ten minutes when it arrived.

1. Il est allé à l'école. He went to school.
2. Il est allé à l'école. He did go to school.
3. Il est allé à l'école. He has gone to school.
I have eaten in this restaurant many times.
5. J'ai parlé au garçon.
I spoke to the boy.
I have spoken to the boy.

GONNA means "going to".

Par exemple:
I'm going to work. = I'm gonna work.
Je vais aller au travail.

WANNA means "want to".

Par exemple:
I want to eat. = I wanna eat.
Je veux manger.

REMARQUE:
Préférez "going to" à "gonna" et "want to" à "wanna".

So, to Brice, I WANNA tell you not to use these especially in formal writing because it's GONNA give you a bad impression to your readers. D'accord ? :-)

San Francisco et moi

Selon wikipedia.fr :

Last Sunday (July 29), I went to downtown San Francisco. On Powell Street were many foreigners on vacation. I heard a number of them speaking in French. There was the urge to talk to them in French but my very limited vocabulary frightened me. Prior to going there, I searched the internet to check if there's an Alliance Française in San Francisco. Et voila !

L'Alliance Française de San Francisco is located on 1345 Bush Street, a good 10-minute walk from the Powel BART station. Since it was a Sunday, the French Institute was closed.

Afterwhich, I spent a few hours in BORDERS Bookstore where I bought a book called "Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong" by couple Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow. It's about the intricacies, uniqueness and peculiarities of the French people and why they are like that. I haven't finished reading it but the very first few pages seemed very interesting. Perhaps, I shall write about it in my future blog entries.

I also bought two other books. One is "An Introduction to French Pronunciation" while the other is "Tune Up Your French". The last book comes with an audio CD as reference to proper pronunciation of the words, phrases and sentences. Here are some good wishes I read in the book.

Bon anniversaire ! = Happy birthday!
Bon voyage ! = Have a good trip!
Bon fête ! = Enjoy the party!
Bon appétit! = Enjoy your meal!
Bon courage ! = Take heart!
Bonne chance ! = Good luck!
Bonne route ! = Have a safe trip!
Bonnes vacances ! = Have a good vacation!
Bonne fin de séjour ! = Enjoy the rest of your stay!
Bonne année ! = Happy New Year !

After the bookstore, I went to Union Square, a small park near the Powell BART station. It's interesting to note that the statue in the Tower which is actually the centerpiece of the park is something related to my country, the Philippines.

The Philippines, as you may know, used to be a colony of the USA. I took pictures of the monument and of its base which tells the story about the Philippines and the USA.

Say or Tell?
Say and tell have similar meanings. They both mean to communicate verbally with someone. But we often use them differently.

The simple way to think of say and tell is:

You say something ( Vous dites quelque chose. )

You tell someone something ( Vous dites quelque chose à quelqu'un. )

You say something.
Vous dites quelque chose.

You tell someone something.
Vous dites quelque chose à quelqu'un.

Ram said that he was tired.
Ram a dit qu'il était fatigué.

Ram told Jane that he was tired.
Ram a dit à Jane qu'il était fatigué.

Anthony says you have a new job.

Anthony tells me you have a new job.

Tara said: "I love you."
Tara a dit : " Je t'aime. "

Tara told John that she loved him.
Tara a dit à John qu'elle l'a aimé.
ou...
Tara a dit à John qu'elle l'aimait.

But, of course, it is not always so easy. Here are a few rules to help you.

Personal object
We usually follow tell with a personal object (the person that we are speaking to). We usually use say without a personal object:

She told me that she loved John. ( Elle m'a dit qu'elle John a aimé. )

She said that she loved John. ( Elle dit qu'elle John a aimé. )

He told everybody that he had to leave. (Il a dit à tout le monde qu'il ai eu partir. )

He said that he had to leave. (Il a dit qu'il devait partir. )

Say "to someone"
With say, we sometimes use "to someone":

He said to me that he was tired.

Tara said to Ram that he had done very well.

Anthony said to her, "I hope you come soon."

"I'd like to sleep," she said to him quietly.

Direct speech
We can use say with direct speech. We use tell only with direct speech that is an instruction or information:

Amanda said, "Hello John. How are you?"

"That's great'" she said.

He told her: "Open the door quietly."

She told me, "I have never been to England."

We can use say with direct questions, but we cannot use tell:

She said: "Do you love me?"

The policeman said to the prisoner, "Where were you at 8pm?"

Reported speech
We can use say and tell to talk about reported information:

She said that it was raining.

She told me that she would call at 2pm.

We cannot use say or tell to talk about reported questions. We must use ask (or a similar verb):

She asked if I had ever been there.

They asked what I wanted to eat.

She asked where he lived.

He asked if she wanted to go home.

Orders, advice
We use tell + object + infinitive for orders or advice:

She told him to sit down.

They told me not to wait.

Tell Neil to have a holiday and forget her.

Phrases
Here are a few fixed phrases with tell. We cannot use say with these phrases:

tell (someone) a story

tell (someone) a lie

tell (someone) the truth

tell the future (= to know what the future will bring)

tell the time (= know how to read a clock)

Right and wrong
Read these examples of correct and incorrect usage:

We cannot...

These are NOT possible...

These are possible...

say someone to do something

Tara said Jo to go away.

Tara told Jo to go away.

say someone something

Panita said me that she was hungry.

Panita told me that she was hungry.

tell something

He told that he likes coffee.

He said that he likes coffee.

tell to someone

Tookta told to me that she was coming.

Tookta told me that she was coming.

Tookta said to me that she was coming.

say a lie

Siriluck always says lies.

Siriluck always tells lies.

tell somebody "direct speech"
(except instructions and information)

Ram told Nok: "Let's turn on the TV."

Ram said to Nok: "Let's turn on the TV."

(Ram told Nok, "Turn on the TV.")

(Ram told Nok: "I was born in 1985.")

say or tell a reported question

She said if I wanted to come.

She asked if I wanted to come.

Tookta told what I wanted to do.

Took asked what I wanted to do.

WILL EAT ou SHALL EAT. Mais comment savoir lequel utiliser -- WILL ou SHALL? Voici un exercise.

1. (Will, Shall) we start our lesson in English?
2. You (will, shall) improve your English if you practice everyday.
3. I (will, shall) write a comment in your blog.
4. They (will, shall) not return tomorrow.
5. You and I (will, shall) have to be online by tomorrow evening.

Selon « Webster's New World English Grammar Handbook », "shall" est employé avec la première personne du singulier ou du pluriel; "will" avec les autres. Par conséquent, voici les réponses correctes: 1. SHALL; 2. WILL; 3. SHALL; 4. WILL; 5. SHALL

Dans ce cas, pourquoi la traduction « Je survivrai » en anglais est "I WILL SURVIVE" ?

Alors... voici les explications.

Selon « Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language » In formal speech and writing, as well as in the informal speech of some educated speakers, SHALL is restricted to use with the first person, singular and plural. I shall go. We shall go.

LES EXCEPTIONS:
When SHALL is used in the second and third persons singular and plural -- (you, he, she, it, they) it denotes DETERMINATION AND COMMAND. Par exemple: You shall go even if you don't want to.

When WILL is used in the first person, singular and plural, it denotes PROMISE AND DETERMINATION. Par exemple: I WILL SURVIVE!

WOULD, SHOULD
1. I (would, should) have left a message on your blog.
2. We (would, should) appreciate if you could reply soon.
3. (Would, Should) you believe me had I told you the truth.
4. They (would, should) like to improve their English.
5. You and I (would, should) talk.

IF YOU WILL DO THIS, I SHALL BE VERY HAPPY!

FAUX USAGE: I MUST TO LEAVE SOON.
USAGE CORRECT: I MUST LEAVE SOON.
L'explication: Quand vouz employez " must " la correcte formation est « must + le verbe sans "to" »

L'exemples:
I must see you. (Je dois te voir.)
You must buy the book. (Vous devez acheter le livre.)
He must learn English in two months.
We must send him the letter today.

Remarques: DEVOIR = to must, to should, to ought to, to have to.

DEVOIR = TO SHOULD
I should see you.
You should buy the book.
He should learn English in two months.
We should send him the letter today.

MAIS, quand vouz employez DEVOIR = TO OUGHT TO ou TO HAVE TO, il y a "TO" aprés le verbe.

L'exemples:
DEVOIR = TO OUGHT TO
I ought to see you.
You ought to buy the book.
He ought to learn English in two months.
We ought to send him the letter today.

DEVOIR = TO HAVE TO
I have to see you.
You have to buy the book.
He has to learn English in two months. (Remarque: Employez-vous "has" parce que "he" est singulier.)
We have to send him the letter today.

History books claim that Ferdinand Magellan of Spain discovered it in 1521. For more than 300 years, Spain ruled over its 7,000+ islands collectively known then as FILIPINAS, named after King Felipe of Spain. Before the turn of the century, America fought with Spain and took over the entire Filipinas. America gave Filipinas an American-sounding name: THE PHILIPPINES. Because it became a colony of the United States (an Allied power in the 40s), the poor Philippines got involved in World War II. Japan, an axis power, invaded it in 1941. The Philippines then has had three major colonizers -- Spain, America and Japan.

We are a nation of many tongues. Believe it or not but the Philippines has about 170 languages, two of which are official as ratified in our 1987 constitution -- Filipino and English. Both languages compete in the spheres of the country's education, business and government. This explains why many Filipinos, just like me, are quite, if not very fluent in both Filipino and English.

Generally, I like learning and knowing new things. Learning a new language, for me, further expands a person's knowledge and further enriches his personality. Aside from English and Filipino, there are three other languages which I want to learn and be very fluent in -- Spanish, Japanese and, of course, French. The just-mentioned languages -- except Filipino, of course -- are in the list of the top 10 languages spoken all over the world. This fact contributes to my passion and interest to learn them.

I can say that even up to now, there are still cultural traits among Filipinos that are quite Spanish and a bit Japanese. The colonizers of the Philippines, in my theory, have penetrated and influenced our very culture and psyche even up to this age. This probably explains my liking and preference for Spanish and Japanese.

I chose to study French because I am fascinated with France and all its many contributions to the world -- in the realms of the arts, cinema, architecture, cuisine, etc. I also want to fully understand and appreciate the French culture and what else is a better way to achieve this but to learn its very soul -- the French language, that is.

I started taking French lessons in January 2006 at d'Alliance Française de Manille. Aside from classroom learning, I also tried other learning strategies such as watching TV5MONDE (a French TV channel), listening to French songs, watching French films, reading books in French, etc. While they aided me in learning new words and grammar rules, I still have difficulties expressing myself in this language. And I think, this is because I have no one here in the Philippines to practice French with. Sure, I have classmates at Alliance but all of us are still beginners. And for me, the only way to improve is to practice it but with French speakers themselves.

Sometime end of May, I bumped into this website that claims to aid language learners by partnering them with native speakers of the language you are practicing. I signed up and days later, I started receiving e-mails from French people. Thanks to MSN Messenger and Skype, I am now able to chat and converse avec les francophones. The relationship between me and my French chatmates is on a value-for-value arrangement -- they help me learn French while I help them learn and improve their English. And so, this blog is for them... for my newly found cyber French friends.

In learning a new language and in life in general, always remember:

Vouloir c'est pouvoir !
